The Importance Of Your Twitter Brand

I read somewhere years ago that you should develop a Twitter brand and tweet almost exclusively about that brand 80% of the time, while the other 20% of the time you can be a bit more ad hoc.

Although things change quickly in the world of social, I think this idea still remains the same. Almost everyone on Twitter has a sort of ‘theme’ that they generally tweet about. There are the feminists, the sports lovers, the techies, the journalists, the reality show connoisseurs, the political commentators and even the party goers. Whenever you follow somebody new, you subconsciously recognise their theme and expect their tweets to follow such a pattern.

For people who follow me, I generally tweet about the Kardashians, Beyoncé, feminism, or occasionally tech/social media stuff. That’s my Twitter theme. I tweet about that sort of stuff 80% of the time, while the other 20% might be about my dog Diego, college work, or live-tweeting a TV show.
My followers expect this kind of content in my tweets, and if tomorrow I started suddenly live-tweeting the cricket world cup all day every day, people would start to unfollow me. Even when I live tweet things sporadically, like Wimbledon or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I don’t get much engagement. This isn’t necessarily because nobody on Twitter is interested in tennis or 90s vampire tv shows, but because people did not follow me to hear about those topics.

By establishing yourself as *the* person to follow when something Kardashian related/politics related/football related happens, you can gain a lot of engagement and followers quickly because people will automatically go to your Twitter to check our what you have to say on the issue.
For example, when Kim dropped a picture of Saint, people were tweeting me asking was I ok, which I thought was gas.

Twitter isn’t a place where you can post any random thought that comes into your head, you should generally try to tweet consistently and regularly about topics of great interest to you. Want to live tweet your breakfast everyday? Go for it. Make that your thing. But don’t just randomly start complaining about your eggs or the bus or the air conditioning in work. Nobody needs that mundane shit on their timeline.
