How Many People Should You Follow?

On Twitter, obviously. o_O

1000. One thousand people is the minimum number you should be following on Twitter. For new Twitter users this can seem overwhelming, unachievable, and slightly insane.

However, if you follow less than 1000 – the average seems to be around 200ish for new users – you’re going to be seeing the same people tweeting all day, every day. It’s likely that the average new user’s 200 following is probably made up of some real life friends, some celebrities, some brands, some sports teams and some parody accounts. So when they’re scrolling through their feed on a daily basis, chances are it’s only going to be the sports teams and their real life friends who are tweeting all day, every day, and this is bound to get boring after a couple of weeks (or a lot less tbh).

Instead, if you follow 1000 people or more, your timeline is going to be a lot more diverse and it’s less likely that you’ll get sick of the same person live tweeting Made In Chelsea.

It can be difficult to build up to such a high number, but I’d definitely recommend in your early days of joining Twitter to try and find a minimum of 10 people to follow each day. You’ll learn soon enough who’s funny and who isn’t, you can unfollow or mute people where necessary, but try to reach 1000 before making any decisions about whether you love or hate Twitter.
