This might sound a bit insane or over the top, but I actually spend a lot of time thinking about how to phrase certain tweets so that they appeal more to my audience.

60% of my followers live in Ireland, but that still means a decent amount are abroad. Using Irish slang or tweeting about only Irish culture/news 24/7 is bound to alienate that 40%. As well as that, on Twitter one of the primary goals of a tweet is to get as many Retweets as possible, and that is far more likely if your tweets appeal to a mass audience – not just your own followers.

When I’m tweeting about things that are understood universally, such as the Kardashians, US Politics, TV shows or world news, I try to use phrases and idioms that are used colloquially across Twitter.

This tweet did fairly well, but I feel like it might have done a bit better if I had used a different, more Americanised word instead of “mates”. It keeps me up at night.

Generally if I’m tweeting about universal stuff, I’ll use words or phrases like ‘lowkey, af, woke, slay, or shade’, whereas if I’m tweeting about something specifically Irish, I’d be more likely to use phrases like ‘howling, bollicks, shite, would you be able’ etc. This is genuinely the most pointless blog I have ever written…. but I’m just trying to show how, on a personal level, I try to tailor my tweets to my audience.
